After student disturbances, the St. Bernadette's Technical Institute in Navrongo, Kassena-Nankana Municipality in the Upper East Region, was shut down.

The management's decision to forbid the students from participating in interethnic football matches was reportedly met with protests from the pupils.

Four members of the Kassena-Nankana Municipal Police Command were hurt in varying degrees as a result of an argument with several schoolchildren that occurred when the police tried to step in.

The police officers are being treated at the War Memorial Hospital in Navrongo, including the Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), Mr. Kinsley Kanda, the Municipal Police Commander, who suffered a leg fracture.

A teacher and 27 kids were detained and are currently being processed for court.

Preliminary investigations indicated that the violence occurred on Saturday, May 13, 2023, due to a football game-related issue, according to Mr. Joseph Adongo, the Municipal Chief Executive for the area, who verified this to the Ghana News Agency.

He said that the students were accused of playing football along tribal lines without the knowledge of the administration, who then proceeded to stop them and request that they refrain from such activities on campus.

The administration went back to stop the kids, but they defied and went back to play the football game the next day along tribal lines.

He said that this incensed the students, who then protested and attacked some faculty members, throwing stones and other things at them and damaging some property, such as a notice board, at the school.

The police were called in after the students began throwing stones in the evening, but the first, second, and third teams of officers were unable to disperse the crowd until the fourth team was able to do so. As a result, four police officers were injured, and as of this writing, they are being treated at the hospital, the man claimed.

According to him, there are now some police officers on campus maintaining peace and order, and the Municipal Security Council will have a meeting once the police commander's health has improved.

There were no kids or instructors present when the GNA visited the school; only police officers were stationed there.
