The broadcasting of exchanges between on-pitch officials and VARs over significant Premier League incidents, according to referees boss Howard Webb, is set to become a frequent occurrence.
On Monday night, Webb discussed some of the two-way audio conversations from this season in a pilot segment with Sky Sports analysts Gary Neville and Jamie Carragher.
The three examined several incidents, including Chelsea's Kai Havertz and Arsenal's Leandro Trossard's disallowed goals against Liverpool and Leicester, respectively, as well as the overturning of a penalty for a handball that Arsenal defender Jakub Kiwior was found to have committed during their 2-0 victory over Newcastle on May 7.
Webb, the chief refereeing officer at Professional Game Match Officials Limited, stated, "We're wanting to do this as much as we can, and obviously tonight is something unique.
"We're moving forward a little bit. We intend to continue doing the same thing over the upcoming season.
“We cannot play it live because it is against the rules of the game and FIFA does not let us to do so. Who can predict where that will end up in the future?However, nothing prevents us from doing what we're doing this evening and showing it afterwards.
I think tonight has been enlightening as we've pulled back the curtain to see how the officials function as a team and some of the justifications for some of the choices that have been made.
We've made an effort to present you with a variety of circumstances, and moving forward, we want to continue to do so.
Nearly all of the incidents that were chosen for the show were favorable reflections on the employment of VAR.
As choices were discussed and reviewed, viewers could hear ongoing conversations between on-field officials and those at Stockley Park.
The overturning of Joelinton's offside call in Newcastle's 5-1 victory at West Ham last month and the penalty awarded to Brentford in their 2-0 victory over Bournemouth in January were two other occurrences that were examined.
The sole problematic event examined was the spot-kick awarded by referee Jarred Gillett for Marcos Senesi's determined tug on Ivan Toney.
