A team of surgeons, anesthetists, pediatricians and nurses led by Dr. Dominic Konadu-Yeboah, a specialist in trauma and orthopedics, led the six-hour operation.
It involved repairing a complex deformity, known medically as polymelia, in a five-month-old baby at the Komfo Anokye University Hospital (KATH). The baby was delivered at a local hospital by Caesareansection and was later sent to KATH four hours after birth.
In addition to polymelia, the child also has an abnormal condition of the right kidney, anorectal disease, genital fistula, and visual impairment. Polymelia is the presence of supernumerary (extra) hands and parts of the body. This is a rare malformation that occurs in about 6 out of 10,000 live births. A few cases have been reported in the lower extremities. Polymelia has a different pathogenesis including incomplete separation of identical twins in the womb during fetal development. It is called pyromelia when other organs are attached to the pelvis.
Speaking about the unusual work done by the team, Dr Konadu-Yeboah said there was a lot of discussion and learning about the condition of the child and the parents before the surgery. Psychological counseling, including procedures, consequences and possible problems, is also provided to the family by a team of experts.
He said that after five months of intensive preparation and pre-operative examinations,including computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (M.RI), sonograms and sonograms to look for other possible complications Well, the complex surgical procedurefinally took place on February 20. 2023 and lasted almost six hours.
