Galamsey Crash: Exciting Miners May Escape Escape -NADMO
A national disaster management official said the remaining mine workers believed to be trapped under a collapsed pit in Korley Teye in the eastern part of Birim North region on Monday, could have escaped.
Seven of the miners wereconfirmed dead when an illegal mining pit collapsed on them onMonday morning, but an eyewitness told Adom News that one person was rescued.five others from injury,NADMO said it will count only three. Hospitals for the injured are not known. Residents suggest that victims of illegal mine accidents avoid using government facilities - such as reporting to the police or seeking medical treatment - for fear that it will be handed over to law enforcement. An eyewitness to the incident,Frank Owusu Amoah, who said he was also involved in the rescue, told Adom News that he saw five people rescued, who were taken to hospital with injuries.
However, NADMO Deputy Director General Douglas Adomako told Adom News Akwasi Dwamena that they managed to save three peoplewho are currently receivingtreatment in hospital. He added that others could use another root to escape the danger that no one was in the pit.
The secretary of the Unity Committee, Emmanuel Okyere, said the death toll could behigher, explaining that the heavy rains prevented many miners from tunneling, leaving the camp open for "those stubborn". He said that when they heard about the accident, they gathered to try to save the trapped people, but their efforts resulted in only seven bodies.
Emmanuel Okyere said he did not believe that any of therescued injured could die.
