Manchester United have been informed that they are set to make one of the most sensational transfers in years by signing a non-League star.

If it is not clear that United will enter the market to buy a new striker this summer, Erik ten Hag did in fact admit it at the weekend.

Marcus Rashford has led United's attack many times this season, but when positioned in his preferred left-back position, Ten Hag has few options to switch to.

Dutch target Wout Weghorst arrived on loan in January but there is little sign that United will sign him permanently.

After United beat Wolves 2-0 on Saturday, manager Ten Hag lamented the team's wasted finish. "We are very good at making the [opposition] goalkeeper the man of the match! That happened today and at Brighton. We needed a better transition, that's for sure, " he say.

Later that day, on BBC Radio 5 Live's 606 conference call, pundits Robbie Savage and Chris Sutton discussed United's need for a new striker with an audience.

With Harry Kane and Victor Osimhen linked with moves to Old Trafford for months now, one caller wondered if United should find a more modest solution to their problems.

"I know United need a new striker and it will cost them £80-100m but I wonder why they don't take notice of these two guys who are not from this league," the caller said. Macaulay Langstaff or Paul Mullin at #MUFC?

Should Manchester United look to football out of the league for their next striker? ?

"[Macaulay] Langstaff, 26, 45 [41 league] goals this year for Notts County. [Paul] Mullin, 28, 38 goals in 46 games..."

Mullin moved to the non-league league to play for Wrexham in 2021, and has since scored 74 goals in 90 games.

The striker's goals helped Hollywood-owned Wrexham win promotion to the Football League after a 15-year absence, winning the National League with a staggering 111 points. Notts County's Langstaff was named National League Player of the Season, but former United midfielder Savage wasn't surprised by the caller's argument.

"I'm not sure Manchester United, you know, if they got into the Champions League, they'd pick Paul Mullin and Langstaff..." Savage replied.

While both players are proven goalscorers, Wrexham and Notts County fans can be pretty confident that the Premier League giants won't arrive this summer.
