Tragedy Strikes as Pit Collapse Claims Lives of 7 Galamseyers, Leaves 17 Others Missing in Eastern Region
Tragic Incident Claims the Lives of Seven Galamseyers as Mining Pit Collapses in Eastern Region's Birim North District,
According to the report, a small-scale mining pit operating illegally collapsed, leading to the confirmed deaths of seven galamseyers. Additionally, 17 individuals remain trapped beneath the debris, with increasingly slim hopes of being rescued. Local residents have rallied together, utilizing all available resources to assist in the ongoing rescue operations.
Regrettably, only two of the trapped miners have been successfully rescued so far, although they have sustained injuries. The lifeless bodies of the seven deceased miners have been placed in the open, their remains concealed by surrounding bushes.
The Ghanaian government remains steadfast in its relentless fight against illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey, as the severe consequences on water bodies continue to pose a significant challenge. Despite implementing various strategies to crack down on these unlawful activities, the desired outcomes have not yet been achieved, placing the nation's precious water resources in jeopardy.
In the midst of this ongoing struggle, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has stressed the pivotal role played by national and regional dialogues in combatting illegal small-scale mining, commonly referred to as galamsey. He has emphasized that without these crucial discussions, the situation would have deteriorated even further.
Despite facing initial criticism of being wasteful and unnecessary, the importance of dialogues was staunchly defended by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo during his address at the Natural Resources Stakeholder Dialogue held in Accra on May 11, 2023.
In his statement, the President elucidated the rationale behind his call for a national dialogue on illegal small-scale mining. He expressed his belief that despite the progress made between 2017 and 2021, galamsey continued to pose a formidable challenge and a grave threat to the nation's very existence. To address this pressing issue, the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources facilitated a national dialogue, followed by subsequent regional dialogues.
President Akufo-Addo's explanation underlined the significance of these dialogues as instrumental platforms for engaging stakeholders and seeking effective solutions to the persisting galamsey problem.
