Moises Caicedo, a midfielder for Brighton, has expressed regret over the challenge that led to Gabriel Martinelli, an Arsenal winger, being replaced only 20 minutes into Sunday's match.
Ultimately, the Seagulls prevailed 3-0, possibly putting an end to Arsenal's ambitions of winning the Premier League. However, Caicedo and Martinelli's shoddy tackle was also a hot topic.
Martinelli had just engaged in an impulsive aerial duel with Brighton star Kaoru Mitoma. The winger for Arsenal struck Mitoma carelessly, leaving the representative of Japan sprawled on the ground.
Caicedo was the first person on the scene to complain to referee Andy Madley about Martinelli's challenge. Caicedo was a transfer target for Arsenal both in January and going forward. Despite the fact that it was risky, the official supported Martinelli and did not even issue a warning to him.
Soon after, Caicedo appeared to take matters into his own hands by exacting some retribution. When Martinelli received the ball, the Ecuadorian pursued him and tackled him from behind. After that, Caicedo and Mitoma gave each other a stealthy high-five to suggest that the violent retaliation had a purpose.
However, over time, Caicedo seems to have come to regret his conduct. Although he hasn't offered an apology, he has since commented on social media that, given the chance again, he would act differently.
He said, "If I could go back in time, I wouldn't have made that poor tackle."
His season shouldn't be over, according to club physician Gary O'Driscoll: "He's a touch sore but he should be okay. He ought to return before the season is through, in my opinion.
Despite numerous offers from Chelsea and Arsenal in January, Brighton refused to sell Caicedo. The player then begged the Seagulls to release him by posting what amounted to a transfer request on social media. But they steadfastly refused, and it didn't take long for Caicedo to sign a new contract with the team that would keep him with them at least until 2027.
Nevertheless, it was recently revealed by 90min that Brighton might be open to selling Caicedo this summer. However, their estimation of the 21-year-old must be reached. That sum is almost £80 million. The player received offers in January that didn't go over £70 million.
