The Kwaku Duahs: Meet the two independents in theKumawu elections with the same name
The people of Kumawu, following the death of their MP,Philip Basoah, will go to the polls for the 8th general election.
With everything now looking up for the election, changes in the names of two of the four candidates approved by the Election Commission to run for office have put political observers on the lookout for the race. . Before the election was announced by the EC, the race had already generated interest as New Patriotic Party candidate Ernest Yaw Anim faced stiff competition in his party's bid to capture the headquarters.
Among his opponents is former member of the party in the constituency Kwaku Duah, who chose to contest against the late MP in the 2020 election. Mr. Duah came second in the 2020 contest with a total of 11,698 valid votes, or 39.96% of the total votes, against Mr. Basoah who won the race with 14,960 valid votes, or 51.11% of the total votes.
In favor of Kwaku Duah, who has decided to run again in the next election, the NPP is also worried about the National Democratic Congress candidate Kwasi Amankwah, who some say could use the opportunity to win. . even though Kumawu constituency is NPP seat. However, in what some believe to be a plan by the ruling NPP, another contestant named Kwaku Duah has joined the race as an independent.
Although voters did not know him until he announced his intention to run for office, some critics believe that the young independent, who hails from Bodomase, is being supportedby the NPP in a cunning plan to undermine the prospects of anindependent presidentialcandidate. According to EC law, independent politicians, in terms of their appearance on the ballot, receive the benefit of "first come, first served" whenthe rank of party representatives has beendetermined. Politically registered.
Therefore, on May 23, two Kwaku Duah will appear in order on the floor of the election. Significantly, the new Kwaku Duah chose the dove as their symbol in the election, as did the old Kwaku Duah.
Other candidates for the Kumawu election are from the Convention People's Party and the Liberal People's Party, bringing the number of candidates to six.
