The man who led the Nerazzurri to the top of the continent for the first time in 45 years, José Mourinho, had his night. The historic triple was completed by Inter's 2-0 victory over Bayern Munich at the Bernabeu, but Mourinho's celebration had an air of seriousness. a liberating catharsis.
The 2009–10 Inter season was legendary, but it would be Mourinho's final in Normandy. The Portuguese coach was aware that he would be guiding this squad of fighters in their final Champions League match in Madrid. The end was announced with a tearful embrace with Marco Materazzi. At the amphitheatre, where he had his crowning achievement, a new chapter awaited.
Here is a look at Inter's Champions League season from 2009–2010.
Mourinho was hired by Inter in 2008 with the express intent of winning the Champions League. The club had recently won its third straight Serie A championship under Roberto Mancini, but the Nerazzurri management was still hungry for more.
More domestic triumphs were achieved under Mourinho's leadership, but in Europe, Manchester United defeated them. Although Inter wasn't quite there yet, the club was prepared for an ascent thanks to the 2009 summer transfer window.
To win the European championship in Madrid the following May, the team recruited Milito, Thiago Motta, Samuel Eto'o, Lcio, and Wesley Sneijder. However, Inter's Champions League run got off to a fairly unlucky start with three draws as Mourinho's tight 4-3-1-2 formation centered on Sneijder did not produce the desired results.
Since they lost to Barcelona on Matchday 5, they needed to defeat Rubin Kazan at home in their final group match. A 2-0 victory followed, but due to their second-place group standing, they were drawn against Mourinho's former team, Chelsea, in the round of 16.
But after switching to a 4-2-3-1 and moving Eto'o to the left flank, Inter beat Chelsea in two legs, with the Cameroonian forward scoring the game-winning goal in a 1-0 victory at Stamford Bridge. Inter advanced into the final four, where Pep Guardiola's mighty Barcelona, the reigning champions and triple-champions the season before, awaited, thanks to a composed performance in the quarterfinals against an overachieving CSKA Moscow.
