Dr. Kwabena Duffuor, a former minister of finance who resigned from the National Democratic Congress (NDC)'s recently concluded flagbearership, has refuted rumors that he intends to leave the NDC and found a new party.
"I've learned that some NDC members are worried that I want to leave the party and start a new one.
I would like to clarify that I have no such ambitions and that I am still fully loyal to the NDC. Dr. Duffuor stated this yesterday in a statement.
He said that he had pledged his allegiance to the NDC and would help the organization win the 2024 elections.
Therefore, he urged the party's membership to band together and work hard to ensure the success of the party.
"The NDC is my home, as it is for all of us, and I will always support our organization.
Let's band together for the sake of our party's success and the advancement of our country.
We are responsible for maintaining the NDC's flame because it is our property.
"Consequently, let's start working," the statement read.
Pull away
Dr. Duffuor, one of the three contenders for flagbearer, withdrew from the polls on the day of the NDC elections to choose the party's presidential and parliamentary candidates, claiming irregularities and a lack of transparency, notably in relation to the voter registration list.
As of right now, the party has started distributing the ballots to the different areas and seats without our help.
"I would like to reaffirm my dedication to the party and grassroots, but it is clear to all of us that I have reservations about the party's readiness to hold free and fair elections.
Participating in such an event would be equivalent to purposefully sipping from a calabash that was poisoned, he added.
Former President John Dramani Mahama won the election last Saturday with a landslide win of 297,603 votes, representing 98.9% of the total legal votes cast. His opponent, Kojo Bonsu, received 3,181 votes, or 1.1%, of the total valid votes cast.
Commitment
Following his withdrawal, there was a lot of talk that Dr. Duffuor would leave the NDC and start a new party.
However, Dr. Duffuor claimed in his statement that he entered the race to help the NDC become the preferred political party of the majority of Ghanaians.
That drive is still present now.
Like many before me, I recognize that our party's interests come before our own objectives and aspirations.
He claims that his involvement in the flag-bearer competition gave him the opportunity to get to know the NDC's grassroots members, hear their tales, and comprehend their issues.
Given this, he said that he was totally dedicated to the NDC "for as long as our quest for a better world continues."
Therefore, he urged the NDC to uphold his principles of accountability and probity in its pursuit of political power.
"We cannot afford to compromise on our foundational ideas of probity and accountability if we want to be successful as a party in achieving our political objectives.
These qualities serve as the beacon for our party and give everything we do meaning.
Without them, we will no longer be who we are and be unable to hold others accountable in comparable situations, the speaker said.
