Due to the injury he sustained as a result of a careless tackle from Brighton's Moises Caicedo, Arsenal winger Gabriel Martinelli is predicted to miss the remaining two games of the season.
Just 20 minutes into the eventual 3-0 loss, Martinelli was forced off the field. As a result, the Gunners almost surely lost the Premier League to Manchester City.
When the Brazilian attacker departed the Emirates Stadium, he was wearing a protective boot, and Mikel Arteta stated afterwards that a scan would be required to determine the extent of the damage.
The Athletic said that the scan's results have returned and demonstrate damage to the ankle ligaments. With the season coming to a finish on May 28 and Arsenal not participating in any other tournaments, even a small injury at this point would be enough to bring the season to an early stop.
Martinelli's injury is not so severe that he will be expected to miss any of the preseason, which is anticipated to begin in early July, but it is significant enough that he won't be available again this season.
Gary O'Driscoll, the club physician for Arsenal, had previously predicted a comeback before the season's finish, but that now doesn't seem to be the case.
In a social media post that seemed to imply it was planned, Caicedo expressed regret for the tackle that caused the injury without actually making an apology for it.
He said, "If I could go back in time, I wouldn't have made that poor tackle."
Earlier in the match, when vying for the ball in the air, Martinelli riskily lunged into Brighton winger Kaoru Mitoma, leaving the Japanese star sprawled to the ground. A television camera then captured a covert high-five between Caicedo and Mitoma as if to say "job done" shortly after Caicedo subsequently cleaned him out from behind.
Gabriel Martinelli's injury has a serious extent, according to Arsenal.
