When Mauricio Pochettino's first Chelsea transfer will be completed as announcement 'close'

Mauricio Pochettino's arrival at Chelsea is accompanied by various uncertainties, and although his announcement as the new head coach is imminent, there are still many decisions and arrangements to be made before the start of pre-season. While new signings will be necessary for the upcoming season, there is also a pressing need to swiftly finalize outgoing transfers.

Chelsea will benefit from offloading players before the end of June, as they aim to balance their finances before what could be another expensive summer in the transfer market. The club has already identified three key positions—a goalkeeper, a defensive midfielder, and a striker—as priorities for the new manager. Additionally, with an already bloated squad and returning loaned players, Pochettino could be tasked with reducing the team size by at least 15 players. This is a significant challenge for any club, especially considering the substantial amounts spent on wages and transfer fees over the past decade.

As a result, Pochettino may have to wait before a true exodus of players occurs, and the initial squad he works with might not differ greatly from Frank Lampard's current one. In fact, the situation may even worsen before it improves. Chelsea will face difficulties in offloading overpaid and underperforming players, particularly in a competitive European transfer market where other clubs are aware of Chelsea's intention to sell. Additionally, Pochettino will need to consider the return of loaned players such as Levi Colwill, Romelu Lukaku, Ian Maatsen, and Malo Gusto.

One player who will join Chelsea in just over a month is Christopher Nkunku. The RB Leipzig attacker's move to Stamford Bridge, agreed upon in November, will be confirmed on July 1. Although he has been plagued by injuries and has been unable to make a consistent impact, Nkunku will be Pochettino's first new signing. However, managing a plethora of attacking talent will be a challenge for the new head coach.

While Nkunku's official announcement as a Chelsea player is still pending, Leipzig's officials have openly acknowledged that the player is heading to England. Similarly, although Pochettino has not been officially appointed as head coach, the final confirmation of his appointment is believed to be imminent following the agreement reached to bring him to the club.

In summary, as Pochettino prepares to take the helm at Chelsea, there are several uncertainties regarding the squad composition and the swift conclusion of outgoing transfers. However, the imminent announcement of Pochettino's appointment and the upcoming arrival of Christopher Nkunku signal the beginning of the new era under the Argentine coach.
