Composed primarily of collagen, a fibrous protein, and hydroxyapatite, a mineralized form of calcium phosphate, bones possess a dense and sturdy structure. This composition gives bones their strength and resilience. The presence of living cells called osteocytes within the bone matrix further contributes to its stability. However, these factors also limit the flexibility of bones.

The primary role of bones is to provide support and protection. They act as a rigid framework, maintaining the body's posture and enabling us to stand upright. Bones support the weight of the body and provide a foundation for muscles to attach and exert force. This structural stability is vital for various bodily functions, such as standing, walking, and performing physical activities.

While bones themselves may not be highly flexible, they collaborate with other tissues in the body to facilitate movement. Joints, where bones meet and articulate, are critical for mobility. Within the joints, flexible connective tissues such as cartilage and ligaments allow for smooth movement and absorb shock. Cartilage provides a smooth surface for bone articulation, reducing friction. Ligaments connect bones and provide stability to the joints. This collaborative interplay between bones and other tissues allows for a wide range of movements.

Muscles, attached to bones via tendons, are responsible for generating force and facilitating movement. When muscles contract, they exert force on the bones, resulting in joint movement. The coordination between muscles, tendons, and bones enables activities like walking, running, and lifting objects. The elasticity and contractility of muscles compensate for the limited flexibility of bones, allowing for greater overall mobility.
