NDC Primaries: John Kwabla Adanu objected to NEC's decision to declare Edem Agbana thewinner
Parliamentary candidate, John Adanu has questioned the decision of the National Executive Committee (NEC) of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to declare Edem Agbana as the winner of the Ketu North parliamentary election.
He wondered why the board,after finding three unmarked ballots, declared them valid, assuming they had a serial number that matched that of the pamphlet issued. Speaking to journalists, Mr. Adanu asked party leaders to look closely at the NDC constitution and guidelines for the localelections.
After three rounds, the two people got 358 votes, as the electoral officers found three unclear ballot papers, two in favor of Edem Agbana and one in favor of John Adanu. However, Mr. Agbana previously claimed that he used360 votes to get 359 votes ofhis opponent, even though the EC announced a second round.
At a press conference on Tuesday, May 16, 2023, NDC Secretary General Fifi Kwetey announced that the NEC has received confirmation that the three unstamped votes were removed from the first ballot that was submitted. "In general,we have a consensus aroundthe table that the vote [in question] is part of the ballot paper that came from the national office that went to the region. Therefore, they are not foreign objects. We also checked and found that there was no over-voting. Mr. Adanu found that this decision was ugly and wrong forhis candidate and his supporters.
"The main point of this decisionis that the serial number andthe vote in question come from the booklet used in the local elections and since there is no limit these votes cannot be taken by foreigners. “This means, in the case of our local elections, that the ballot stamp is not necessary, because there is no limit to the number of votes and the matching of theserial number on the pamphlet.
“Can we hold an election without a scoreboard and hope that there is no voter turnout to make the election credible? If these votes were removed during the process, would we still be there? Or is the fact that they were withdrawn after graduation and not even after the EC declaration makes them valid? Can our members accept this if it happens to us in the national elections? I am very sad,” he said. However, he expressed his continuedsupport for the growth of the NDC in the constituency and the ultimate goal of winning government in 2024.
"Despite these concerns, I remain optimistic about the cause of the party for victory in 2024. My prayer is that this willnot happen to us in the future, and I pray that this principle will be corrected one day no matter how long it takes. Before that future comes, I will dedicatemyself to such efforts,” he said.
