A farmer at Breman Nkonya in the Ashanti Region of Ghana has allegedly shot his girlfriend after a dispute over an increase in 'chop money' - a term commonly used in Ghana to refer to money used to buy food and other essentials in a relationship.
According to reports, the incident occurred on Monday evening when the couple got into an argument over the amount of 'chop money' the farmer, identified as Kwadwo Tawiah, would give his girlfriend, whose name has not been disclosed.
Eyewitnesses say that the argument escalated quickly and turned physical, with the farmer attacking the girlfriend before retrieving his shotgun and firing a shot in her direction. The victim was rushed to the hospital, where she is said to be in critical condition.
Speaking to the media, a relative of the victim revealed that the couple had been dating for a few months and that the farmer had recently increased the 'chop money' from GH˘50 to GH˘70 per week. However, the girlfriend had demanded an additional GH˘20, which is said to have angered the farmer and led to the dispute.
The incident has shocked residents of the Breman Nkonya community, many of whom have expressed concern about the rising levels of violence in relationships in Ghana.
In recent months, there have been reports of several incidents of domestic violence in various parts of the country, with some leading to the death of victims. Experts have attributed the rise in such cases to a number of factors, including an increase in economic pressures and stresses, as well as a lack of effective intervention and support systems.
The police have confirmed the incident and have launched an investigation into the matter. They have called on any witnesses or individuals with information about the incident to come forward and assist with the investigation.
The incident has also sparked a conversation on social media about the need for individuals in relationships to focus on effective communication and conflict resolution, and to seek help if they are experiencing violence or abuse.
Cases of domestic violence are a serious concern in Ghana and require urgent attention and intervention to help prevent future occurrences. It is essential for individuals to seek help and support if they are experiencing violence or abuse in their relationships, and for society as a whole to work together to promote healthy and non-violent relationships.
