Abbie Essel Writes: In the 2090 World Where Everyone Is Human

One day, I asked my mother to tell me the stories her great grandmother used to tell her when she was my age. Stories about the world her great grandmother grew up in. I asked, “Mama, can you tell me your Nana’s stories of the world again?” My mother smiled and sat beside me. With her arms around my shoulders, she said: “My Nana said growing up in that world those years ago was not easy, my dear. The ultimate difficulty was respect for humanity. The people she saw had no sense of humanity. They killed because they were triggered by something as trivial as ethnocentrism, and religio-centrism. It was hard”. And so I asked, “how is this world different from that one?” She said, “This world is different because we treat each other as humans.”
I stare out my bedroom window at the beautiful, peaceful night sky and smile at the calm stars. Even at my young age, I can feel the happiness radiating from the stars and the warm smile the moon is spotting. Deep within me, I know this world is so beautiful, more tolerating, more respectful, more refreshing. My mind takes me back to the conversation with Mama some days ago. I always enjoy her telling me the stories her great grandmother told her when she was a little girl. Stories about how the world was, a profound contrast to the world we live in now. I cannot help but smile and feel enormous gratitude that I am a young girl in the year 2090, a year that saw the world becoming a better place.
When I look around, I see a world where everyone is free. Where everyone greets each other without malice, and everyone genuinely inquires about each other’s health. I see a world where the rich and poor are coexisting peacefully. Where children of the poor and the rich play together on the same playground and buy from the same ice cream truck. I see a world where children come home from school with happy smiles on their faces, full of energy and enthusiasm to relay all their endeavours at school to their moms and dads. Stories of bullying absent in their narrations. I see a world where children go for camping trips happily because they and their parents know they are safe.

I see a world where neither religion, sexual inclinations nor ethnicity is viewed as a yardstick for measuring a person’s credentials or personality. I see a world where a Christian and a Muslim and a Traditionalist utilize the same social facilities without fear that the other will turn on him or her. I see a world where people can share their views on all social issues and be confidence that they will be educated and brought to the right path when they are wrong, without violence. I see a world where people are not driven by hate for an ethnic group or an association and kill innocent people who are going about their activities. I see a world where justice is served regardless of religion or ethnicity, class, family or association. A world where a person is innocent until proven guilty.
I see a world where social media is a safe space. A world where social media serves its purpose, as a platform to socialize. A platform where people can relieve their stress after a hard day. A platform that does not create an avenue fo?r bullying or promote bullying. A platform where people respectfully share opinions and views. A platform where people conduct legal and honest businesses to financially support themselves and their families.

I see a world where females are safe. A world where parents can send their girl-child off to boarding houses of high schools and off to the university without the fear that there will be a call that their daughter’s corpse was found somewhere with missing body parts. I see a world where people are not so money-hungry that they see killing or robbing innocent people as an option. I see a world that friends can go out together to have fun without fear that one of them is setting up the rest. I see a world where you can board a taxi and not fear that the driver is a “bad guy”.
I see a world where bosses treat their employees with respect. Where bosses treat their employees fairly and give them what they deserve. Where companies are transparent and honest with their clients and do not cheat them of their hard-earned money.
I see a world where teachers and lecturers do not ask for sexual favours before they do their jobs. A world where students are not compelled or forced by circumstances to accept any options laid on the table just to get the grades they have worked hard for.
I see a world where politicians are honest individuals. Where they do their duties and deliver on their promises. Where politicians do not deliberately make citizens suffer and pay for things they know nothing about, under false development guises. I see a world where governance is transparent and fair. A world where the media works independently without government interferences. A world where the media and politicians take accountability and do not justify wrong.

I am just really proud of this world. When Mama tells me her Nana’s stories, I cannot help but feel sorry and sad for all those who were victims and culprits of situations that should not have happened. I wish I could hold their hands and bring them to my world where no one judges anyone for whatever reasons. Where everyone is careful of what they say so they do not offend anyone intentionally. A world where everyone is making an honest living. A world where even night times are safe. This world also has its ups and downs. Of course people fall sick, people experience accidents, people die, people lose their properties. All these tragedies however happen not due to deliberate human orchestrations but because naturally, they were meant to happen.
But it is a world where people uplift and motivate each other. A world where people share the joy and pain of other people without pretense or false intentions.

This world is not perfect in any way. Believe me, it is not. In this world however, I see people treat each other for who they are, humans.
