POLICE RELEASE NAMES OF VICTIMS OF U.S. EMBASSY CONVOY ATTACK, SAY 2 SUSPECTS ARRESTED

Two people were detained in connection with the Tuesday attack on the US Embassy convoy in the area, according to the Anambra State Police Command, which claimed to have raided a camp used by local hoodlums in the Ogbaru Local Government Area.

The names of those who were in the US government vehicles when the gunmen attacked the convoy have also been made public. Three US Embassy employees and four police officers were reportedly killed in the assault. killed in the attack.


The suspects were detained on Wednesday, according to the state police commissioner, CP Echeng Echeng, who made this statement during a press conference on Thursday in Awka, Anambra State.

Echeng said police operatives moved swiftly as soon as the command got information and combed the area, while also raiding a camp used by gunmen in the area and finding that it had been totally deserted. They were able to arrest two people, who are now helping police in their investigation.

As you are probably aware, on May 16, 2023, a group of representatives from the American Consulate in Lagos and their police escorts (USA) were ambushed.


"As a result, a joint team made up of mobile police officers and Nigerian Navy soldiers stationed in Onitsha was immediately sent to the area. The joint security team arrived on the scene of the incident and engaged the attackers in a shootout, but they were able to flee through a nearby forest.

"On May 1, joint security forces, including troops from the Nigerian Army, the Nigerian Navy, and police tactical teams from the command, raided a camp in the Ogwuaniocha community of the Ogbaru LGA that was thought to be the hiding place of the attackers but found that it had been abandoned. After being detained, two potential witnesses are now assisting the police with their investigation. The criminal camp was razed down by the joint security team."


The CP claimed that the contacts of the men who were arrested were discovered through their phone calls and that the command is steadily drawing closer to the murderers.

In response to a question regarding the level of assistance the command had received from the US government following the incident, Echeng stated that the US embassy had been helpful and had also provided the command with the necessary details regarding the officials and their mission to Anambra. 

Whether or not the officials requested security clearance from the command before entering the state is not the best time to assign blame, he said, adding that the current priority is to bring the offenders up to speed with the law.


"The preliminary investigation conducted by the command following the incident revealed that five male officials from the US Consulate and four armed Mobile Police were escorted from Lagos on a mission to evaluate the effects of erosion in Ogbaru LGA while they were traveling in a convoy of two vehicles when they were suddenly attacked by armed men who opened fire on them and their vehicles, the official said.

The information provided by the CP further identified the agents and officials who were traveling in the convoy. They are: Sunday Prince Ubong, Ekene Nweke, Hassan Etila, Avwuvie Kaye Monday, Bukar. A. Kabuiki - (Police), Jefferson Obayuwane (RTD DSS personnel),

Police officers Friday Morgan, Adamu Andrew, and Emmanuel Lukpata are involved.

"Unfortunately, seven people—three consulate employees and four mobile police escorts—were killed during the attack, and two additional consulate employees have not yet been located.

They were all members of Squadron 23, Police Mobile Force, Lagos, and their names are Inspr. Bukar Adams, Inspr. Friday Morgan, Inspr. Adam Andrew, and Inspr. Emmanuel Lupata. No American citizen was among the casualties.


"The bodies of the deceased have all been found and placed in a morgue, and the Anambra State government is collaborating with the state police command and other security agencies to search for and rescue the missing officials throughout the night.

In this regard, I request that anyone in the public with information about the identities or whereabouts of the offenders kindly contact the police right away.

"I would like to take this opportunity to express my condolences on behalf of the Anambra State Police Command to the families, friends, and the US Consulate regarding this tragic incident. Please allow me to reassure you of the command's security agencies' resolve and determination to find and prosecute those responsible for these heinous crimes.
