Liverpool and Aston Villa played out a thrilling 1-1 draw on Saturday afternoon, one that was frustrating for both teams as Jurgen Klopp's side are now virtually out of the Champions League race and as Unai Emery's men gave up their lead late on.

Aston Villa started well and won a penalty in the 20th minute, only for Ollie Watkins to fire wide.

However, Allison was beaten before long, as Jacob Ramsey managed to turn in a Douglas Luiz cross in the 27th minute, earning the visitors a deserved lead at Anfield.

After taking the lead, Aston Villa defended excellently and it looked more likely that they'd make it 2-0 than concede an equaliser.

Firmino's emotional final goal at Anfield

Liverpool improved in the second half and even had the ball in the net in the 55th minute through Cody Gakpo, although it was ruled out for an offside in the build-up.

Aware that a defeat would mathematically leave them with no hope of a top four finish, Liverpool threw everything at Aston Villa, including substitute Roberto Firmino in what was his final game for Liverpool at Anfield.

It was a special farewell for the Brazilian as he combined with Mohamed Salah in the final minute of normal time to equalise and make it 1-1 ahead of 10 minutes of stoppage time.

There were to be no more goals, meaning this was a sharing of the spoils that doesn't suit Liverpool at all.
