Brentford came from behind to beat Tottenham Hotspur
A stunning brace from Bryan Mbeumo helped Brentford come from behind to win and spoil Tottenham's final home game of a miserable season.
Mbeumo hit two fine efforts into the far corner early in the second half, before team-mate Yoane Wissa scored, as Brentford overturned Tottenham's first-half lead through captain Harry Kane. Just days after team-mate Ivan Toney was handed an eight-month ban for breaching theFootball Association's betting rules, Mbeumo showed Brentford fans they could trusthim to score goals. It was a moment of magic from Kane, whose future at Spurs remains uncertain, when he curled the ball well into the top corner from a free kick. He inspired his team and played with confidence and skill,creating great chances they should have missed.
Their ruthlessness was punished, however, as Brentford responded immediately in the second half -Mbeumo took chances, firing past goalkeeper Fraser Forster twice in 12 minutes. Any chance of a late Tottenham equalizer was dashed when substitute Shandon Baptise stole possession from Oliver Skipp and Mbeumo assisted Wissa for a fine finish.
It was another performance that summed up Tottenham'sseason - a period of promise before a disastrous result. "The energy dropped a lot in the second half," senior managerRyan Mason said. "We had to take our chances when they presented themselves in the first half. They really took theirs. It's hard to take. It's not just one half of the ball, you have to do it all game.
Tottenham's vital hopes of European qualification are dwindling fast, while Brentford know they will end the season with a successful Premier League top 10.
"In many ways it's amazingwhat we've achieved this season. Hopefully there will bea few more," Brentford bossThomas Frank told BBC Sport.
Maybe we can push it to the last day and go to Europe. But only the most promising 10,maybe eighth or ninth, we don'tknow but it's amazing.
