INTEGRITY OVER MONEY
Wednesday, May 17th, 2023, after finishing work, Reindolf and I decided to walk home. Along the way, we noticed a notebook and scattered papers on a busy road near Sunyani Prisons. I quickly grabbed the book, while my friend picked up the papers. To our surprise, there was money inside the envelope. Spotting Mrs. Ellen Baidoo's car passing by, I assumed it belonged to her. We went to campus to give it to her, but she confirmed that it wasn't hers. Mrs. Baidoo mentioned that a prison officer who drove a similar car had passed by on the same day. We approached the officer, but she also denied it was hers. After counting the money and realizing it amounted to GH¢10,000, Mrs. Baidoo suggested we send it to Sompa FM 98.9 in Sunyani, as she trusted them. Feeling exhausted, we decided to go home, rest, and send it the following day.
Later that night, Mrs. Baidoo called again to inquire if we had been able to go to Sompa FM. I explained that we were tired and couldn't make it. She then suggested meeting the next day so we could go together. We met as planned, and the manager at Sompa FM took our details, the found items, and the money. He assured us that he would contact us when the owner came forward.
The next day, we received a call notifying us that the owner had arrived. We went to meet the person, who accurately described the items and the amount of money in the envelope. It indeed belonged to him. We granted an interview, and the man expressed his gratitude. He requested our contact information for further discussions.
To add to our circumstances, I was experiencing issues with my phone and laptop, and my fees had only been partially paid (thanks to the Baidoo Scholarship). Moreover, we were in need of money that day. Despite these challenges, we made the decision to search for the owner of the money.
My friends criticized me, and some people claimed we had missed out on an opportunity to benefit from the money ourselves. However, deep within me, I knew we had made the right decision. One lady acknowledged, "Indeed, good people still exist. Even in today's modern Ghana, you are truly blessed."
Our sole objective was to return the money to its rightful owner, and with the help of Mrs. Ellen Baidoo and Sompa FM Sunyani, we succeeded in doing so. I am grateful to Mrs. Ellen Baidoo, Sompa FM, and my friend Reindolf for their cooperation in locating the owner. I believe that God will bless us for this good deed we have done.
