Roberto Firmino explains why he is leaving Liverpool

Roberto Firmino has explained his decision not to extend his contract with Liverpool, revealing that he believes the time has come for him to move on. The Brazilian forward will be leaving the club after an impressive eight-year tenure, during which he played a crucial role in the team's success, contributing to the winning of seven trophies. Firmino was widely recognized as the selfless third attacker in Liverpool's frontline, providing the perfect support to the prolific Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane.

Speaking to the Independent ahead of his final game at Anfield against Aston Villa, Firmino expressed his reasons for departing. "Unfortunately, the cycle here is ended, and I understand it is time to go," he said. Reflecting on his achievements with the team, he added, "I am very proud of everything that I have done here with the team, what we achieved together, and the beautiful history we made together. It was absolutely incredible. We are leaving a great legacy."

Firmino acknowledged that he symbolized the values and playing style of Jurgen Klopp's side, stating, "Sometimes I enjoy more the assists than actually scoring a goal myself. To play alongside these two guys [Salah and Mane], top players, it was an honor and a pleasure for me." The Brazilian forward expressed his happiness and pride in the role he played within the team.

Liverpool is hopeful that Firmino will recover from a minor injury in time to make his final appearance at Anfield on Saturday. Although his playing time has decreased in recent seasons, Firmino has still made significant contributions this year, scoring 11 goals and providing five assists in 33 appearances across all competitions for the Reds.

In other Liverpool news, there have been some adjustments to the team's system, with Trent Alexander-Arnold given more freedom to attack. However, there have been some growing pains associated with this change, as seen in a situation where Alexander-Arnold's tackle led to a counterattack by Aston Villa, prompting a stern look from Virgil van Dijk. Alexander-Arnold will need to learn how to better understand his position and its impact on the defensive line, and Van Dijk appears ready to guide him through this learning process.

Looking ahead, there are expected to be significant changes in Liverpool's midfield unit during the summer, raising questions about Jordan Henderson's role. With promising performances from Curtis Jones and Fabinho rediscovering his best form, the midfield dynamics are set to undergo a transformation.

As Firmino prepares to bid farewell to Liverpool, he leaves behind a lasting legacy and a remarkable chapter in the club's history. The team will undoubtedly feel the impact of his departure, but as with any transition, new opportunities will arise for players to step up and contribute to Liverpool's future success.
