Ghanaian nuclear experts on study tour to US to promote development of advanced reactors
A group of prominent Ghanaian nuclear experts has embarked on a study tour to the United States, marking an importantmilestone in Ghana's nuclear energy ambitions.
Representatives of scientists, companies and regulators participate in the study tour ofFIRST (Foundational Infrastructure for Responsible Use of Small Modular Reactor Technology) study tour, an important initiative from the Leader's Climate Conference USA Joe Biden 2021. The program aims to help partner countries, including Ghana and Kenya, establish nuclear energy programs that meetinternational safety, securityand non-proliferation standards.

FIRST, a U.S. government initiative. Many companies, provide capacity building support to enable their partner countries to adopt small reactor reactors (SMRs) or other advanced technologies in their sustainable energy plans. Program goals include integrating next-generation nuclear power generation, achieving clean and reliable energy goals, protecting the global climate, and promoting collaboration between governments, industry, national laboratories, and University.
The first goal is to helpcountries understand the potential of SMRs and reactors to meet their clean energy needs while delivering multiple benefits. These include low cost, scalability to meet different grid sizes, layoutflexibility and small footprint, the ability to integrate with other clean energy sources such as wind and solar, and variousapplications such as desalination , industrial processes, district heating and hydrogen production. .
Representing Ghana on this educational trip are peoplefrom the Ghana Atomic Energy Commission, the Ministry of Energy, the Nuclear Regulatory Authority, the Volta River Authority and the Association of Ghana Industries. Ghanaian representatives including Dr. Robert Bright Sogbadji, Deputy Director of Energy at the Ministry of Energy; Teacher. Seth Kofi Debrah, Chairman of the Ghana Atomic Energy Commission; Dr. Stephen Yamoah, CEO of GhanaNuclear Power; Dr. Archibold Buah-Kwofie, Deputy Chairmanof the Ghana Atomic Energy Commission; Dr. Nii-Kwashie Allotey, Chairman of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission; Dr. Rex Gyeabour Abrefah; Mr. Edward Ekow Obeng-Kenzo, Deputy Director General of the Volta River;President of the Association of Ghana Industries (AGI) DrHumphrey Ayim Dake and MrGeorge Kofi Appiah. During the study visit, the leaders of this respected company will be involved in the exchange of knowledge, learning from their counterparts in the United States. The trip included twovisits to 17 national laboratories in the United States, namely Idaho National Laboratory in Idaho and Sandia National Laboratory in Albuquerque, New Mexico. The delegation will also visit the North Anna Nuclear Generating Station in Virginia, gaining insight into advanced reactor technologyand the best nuclear facilities.
Ghana and Kenya were selected for this important partnership because they are working together to develop the next nuclear power plant on the African continent. As these twocountries are racing against time, this educational trip provides an importantopportunity to gain expertise, promote cooperation and improve their capabilities in the deployment of nuclear energy.
By participating in programs such as the first and participating in international cooperation, Ghana and Kenya are demonstrating their commitment to the successful adoption of advanced nuclear technology. The knowledge gained from this educational trip will not only contribute to their various nuclear energy programs, but will also pave the way for a clean and sustainable energy future in Africa.
