In front of a  Camp Nou crowd keen to party, champions Barcelona were deservedly beaten 2-1 by an impressive Real Sociedad side who look set to secure a top-four spot.

The newly-crowned LaLiga Santander champions got off to a disappointing start at home to the Basque side and were lucky to go in at half time at just one goal behind.

La Real were up for this game as it meant more for them, with the Basque outfit keen to consolidate fourth spot and Champions League football next season.

With Villarreal beating Girona earlier, the side from San Sebastian began the game just two points above the Yellow Submarine, but a win would put them five points ahead with three games to play.

They started well and capitalised on their opponents' slackness, pouncing on a Jules Kounde error in the fifth minute to counter. It was Alexander Sorloth who won possession and he drove forward before squaring it to Mikel Merino, who finished between Marc-Andre ter Stegen's legs.

The second goal, in the 71st minute, came in similar fashion. This time, Martin Zubimendi robbed Frenkie de Jong in midfield and again La Real broke quickly. It was Takefusa Kubo back to Martin Zubimendi and Zubimendi to Sorloth, who finished confidently past Ter Stegen.

Shortly afterwards, Marcos Alonso was lucky not to see a red card after appearing to slap Take Kubo in the face after being fouled by the Japanese midfielder.

The game continued without urgency, however, with Xavi content to empty his bench and give some fringe players a run out, and La Real looking to have the game wrapped up.

Lewandowski adds a goal to his Pichichi candidacy

The game had appeared to be over, with the supporters at the Camp Nou only sticking around because there was a title party to be had, regardless of the score.

However, a striker like Robert Lewandowski is always hungry for goals and he got one to put one hand on this season's Pichichi trophy.

Pablo Torre swung in a hopeful cross from the right and the Polish forward's bullet header flew past Alex Remiro in goal.

With the deficit cut to one, the intensity of the game increased for the final stages, but the score remained Barcelona 1-2 Real Sociedad.

Barcelona party on uninterrupted, and the fans will forgive this misstep in the circumstances.

The Txuri-Urdin, meanwhile, have plenty of reasons to celebrate too and are in a great position to secure Champions League football for next season.
