A photo of a huge spider hanging from a roof has sparked concern, with some joking that the homeowner should move out.

A concerned man in Baldivis, 45km south of Perth, shared the scary image on a local Facebook community group and asked for help identifying the mammoth arachnid.

It shows the spider sitting in a web with its long pointed legs curled up under a bulky dark abdomen, as if it is ready to pounce.

The huge spider (pictured) was spotted hanging from the roof of a property in Baldivis, 45km south of Perth

The original poster described it as 'one of the biggest I've seen'.

'That spider is jacked! Only suggestion is to grab your valuables and find a new home,' one local joked.

Another advised the man to 'just accept that spider owns your house now and you're paying it rent to stay there'.

Another confused person asked if there was a 'sack' attached to it.

'I've zoomed every way I can and it's the craziest arachnid I ever saw… where does it begin and where does it end?', they asked.

Arachnologist Dr Volker Framenau from Murdoch University identified the spider as a common garden orb-weaver (pictured)

Some suggested it might be a black house spider while others suggested it was a redback.

But arachnologist Dr Volker Framenau from Murdoch University said the spider was likely the common garden orb-weaver Hortophora biapicata.

'These spiders are fairly common this time of the year,' he told Yahoo News.

'The image is not the best for identification, but this is really the only large orb-weaver spider of that appearance around at this time of the year in Perth. This would be more different in the eastern states, where a fair more species in the genus Hortophora occur.'

Garden Orb Weaving Spiders

The commonly seen Garden Orb Weavers are stout, reddish-brown or grey spiders with a leaf-shaped pattern on their fat, roughly triangular abdomens, which also have two noticeable humps towards the front. They sometimes have a dorsal stripe which may be white or brown edged with white.

Orb weaving spiders make suspended, sticky, wheel-shaped orb webs. Webs are placed in openings between trees and shrubs where are likely to fly.

Orb weaving spiders are found throughout Australia.

Generally, the spider constructs its web in the evenings and takes it down again at dawn. The spider rests head-down in the centre of the web, waiting for prey.
