With effect from this morning, Saturday, May 20, 2023, Ghana has eliminated all COVID-19 limitations at entrance ports around the nation.

The news was made in a statement released today by Dr. Patrick Kuma-Aboagye, Director-General of the Ghana Health Service (GHS).

The World Health Organization (WHO) declared COVID-19 to no longer be a public health emergency of international concern on May 5, 2023, according to the announcement, which explained the decision to ease the limitations.

The GHS statement claims that tests at all entry points and before takeoff are no longer required for all passengers.

Also banned is the COVID-19 health declaration form for visitors from outside.

On May 17, 2023, the COVID-19 Task Force met nationally to discuss the removal of these needs in light of the regional and international environment.

Even though the limitations are no longer in place, the Ghana Health Service emphasizes the importance of ongoing awareness and prevention against COVID-19 infections. In addition to the ongoing immunization campaign, sentinel stations in each of the 16 areas will test anyone who exhibits fever, cough, or sore throat symptoms for influenza and COVID-19. As part of continuous surveillance operations, any novel varieties of concern will be sought.

The general population is encouraged to continue practicing standard safety precautions, including routine handwashing with soap and water or the use of hand sanitizers with alcohol as the active ingredient. Fever, cough, and sore throat symptoms should prompt people to visit their local hospital for treatment. Cases with COVID-19 positivity shall be handled in accordance with current procedures.

According to the Ghana Health Service, the nation's healthcare infrastructure has continued to be strong enough to handle any future COVID-19 spikes. They will continue to be operationally prepared and adaptable in their response to the virus, working with the Ministry of Health and its partners while also ensuring the provision of crucial medical services and readiness for the introduction of new strains with enhanced severity or transmissibility.
