Real Sociedad defeated Barcelona at Camp Nou in LaLiga for the first time since 1991 thanks to goals from Mikel Merino and Alexander Sorloth.

Barcelona lost to Real Sociedad 2-1 on Saturday, dampening their LaLiga championship celebrations at Camp Nou.

Last time out, Xavi's team defeated Espanyol 4-2 to win the top-flight title. The players then celebrated on the field, much to the dismay of their opponents' supporters.

With La Real's early goal from Mikel Merino and his breakaway finish from Alexander Sorloth, the Blaugrana were unable to celebrate their first league title since 2019 with a victory at home.

With three games left, Robert Lewandowski's late header gave Barca hope, but their opponents held on for their first away victory at Camp Nou since May 1991, putting Imanol Alguacil's team in the driver's seat for Champions League play.

Within five minutes, La Real had their opponents cold on the counter, thanks to a quick finish from Merino.

When Ousmane Dembele met Lewandowski's delivery, Barca appeared poised to tie the score, but Alex Remiro made an incredible stop before the Poland international pulled wide from close range.

The Blaugrana, on the other hand, enjoyed a life of luxury as Ander Barrenetxea missed two excellent chances either side of Marc-Andre ter Stegen's save from Mohamed Ali-Cho.

After Sorloth missed with a header from six yards out, Norway's international player made no mistake as he concluded a brilliant counterattack. Then, Ter Stegen made an outstanding save to deny Diego Rico.

With a well-earned victory, La Real moved five points ahead of Villarreal in fifth place and set up a thrilling climax late on thanks to Lewandowski's stunning header.

Barca wasn't going to win the championship, despite the fact that they were hardly deserving of it.

La Real entered the match on Saturday having lost each of their previous 24 LaLiga visits to Camp Nou after drawing there in 1995.

With 12 of their 13 attempts coming from within the area of the hosts, the guests recorded 1.9 xG versus Barca's 1.5, demonstrating how frequently they found space in the final third.
