Manchester City will receive the Premier League championship as a result of Nottingham Forest's defeat.
Mikel Arteta expressed regret and reflected on a "really sad day" after Arsenal's tenuous chances of winning the Premier League were dashed by a 1-0 loss against Nottingham Forest.
After Taiwo Awoniyi's first-half goal gave Forest the three points necessary to maintain their top-flight status, Manchester City was declared the winner.
The Gunners, who were unstoppable for the majority of the season, spent 248 days at the top of the standings and had an eight-point lead over City in March before an alarming slip allowed Pep Guardiola's unrelenting juggernaut to pass them and win their fifth championship in six years.
No team has topped the standings for a longer period of time without winning the league, which devastated Arteta.
It was a "really sad day, a lot of difficult emotions, we lost the game, we lost the championship after 10 and a half months of fighting for it and nine and a half months almost on top of it," he said.
"We created a lot of delusion and hope that we could succeed in the end, but in the end, we fell short. Congratulations to Man City; they are the winners and rightfully so; they have maintained their dominance for 38 games whereas we haven't been able to.
That's it, and on my part, I apologize. We had this idea in our heads that we could pull it off, but in the end, the team failed, and I'm to blame.
"Today is nothing but a miserable day. You see a lot of people putting in so much effort, so much time, so much effort, and so much belief, and I feel unhappy for them because we wanted to find a way to fit as much as we could into that group.
"We failed, and it's my duty and my responsibility to think about it and analyze it.
