Enforcement of 2017 ITLOS regime: Ghana Boundary Commission urges Ghanaians and Ivorians to report violations. 



The national coordinator of the Ghana Boundary Commission is urging Ghanaians and Ivorians living on the border of Grand Bassam to do their part to protect the borders of the two countries by reporting any violations.

Major General Emmanuel Kotia,speaking at the awareness event, urged the community to be cautious. “We want to takethis opportunity to advise you to be careful about our borders.

"Make
 sure that any violation by any party will be reported toeither the Ghana Boundary Commission or the Ivory CoastBoundary Commission," he said. He said that by maintaining the sanctity of the international demarcation line, the peoplethere are helping to protect the borders of the two countries.

Major General Emmanuel Kotia said that the two countries have discussed various plans on how to promote cooperation in the border. “What we are doingnow is to implement the ITLOS decision, the border officials of Ghana and Ivory Coast are working together to manage many issues.


"First,
 a joint inspection of the sea to ensure that there is no damage to the sea. "Secondly,we will also carry out activities to help people living along the coast in terms of cross-border cooperation," he said.

Major General Emmanuel Kotia also asked the residents to abide by the laws and regulations governing international waters. "We know that many of you are involved in fishing, please make sure thatyou follow the rules and do not go where you are not supposed to go in terms of international high seas," he said. said.

The Chief Resident of Ghana and Grand Bassam expressed his enthusiasm for the campaign. He said they will help protect the western coast of Ghana.


“This program has been
 very helpful and as you can see my team is very interested in the education we have received.We are from Ghana, and it isour responsibility,” he said.

Another resident, a fisherman, Robert Adjorlolo, said he had heard about the water dispute and the decision of ITLO, but hedid not know that he had a role in enforcing the decision. Hesaid they will report any violations.


The high tide of western Ghana
became the subject of the 2017 International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea (ITLOS) judgment which declared thatthere is no violation of Ghana's high tide from the Ivory Coast. Enforcement of 2017 ITLOS regime: Ghana Boundary Commission urges Ghanaians and Ivorians to report violations. 
He added
 that Ghana has not violated Cote d'Ivoire's sovereignty over its oil exploration in the disputed waters.

The Ghana Boundary Authority conducts regular outreach programs in the border areas to educate residents on their role in protecting the country's borders. Attendees of the eventwere leaders, residents and opinion leaders.

A joint investigation by the Ghana Boundary Commission, the Navy and other state agencies in April showed thatthere was no violation of theWestern Sea of ??Ghana as established by the ITLO in 2017. The team used patrol boats and warships to search around the western coast of Ghana to ensure that no illegal activities are taking place there.
