"Wicca is a perfectly acceptable religion, albeit not one I subscribe to. Really coming about in the 1950's, it spread fairly far. Still ceremonial and rich in strict rituals, it was a softer version of more traditional practice. But somewhere along the way, we've come to view Wicca as the whole of paganism and the whole of witchcraft. And certainly, that isn't the case. At one point, the whole world was pagan. It was the natural state, the default. And of course, it's shifted over time. Our numbers aren't likely to ever be where they were. But that's a different conversation.
Paganism is broad and vast. Different practices and traditions, deities, types of magical systems. The diversity in it is beautiful. To have that reduced down to a singular practice and in the process, taking over paganism is maddening. And the same goes for folk magical practices. Some of the more complicated issues that have come from this is the false assumption that all witches are or should be Wiccan and that all witches must conform to the frame of the Wiccan moral system regardless of their actual beliefs and practices.
It's valid to be a Wiccan. It's valid to be a Norse pagan and practice Norse witchcraft. It's valid to practice Stregheria. It's valid to practice Roman paganism or Hellenism. It's fine to practice NO pagan religion and just have a witchcraft practice. It's fine to adhere to whatever calls to you, feels correct to you and leave what doesn't. You don't need anyone's permission and you owe no one an explanation for what you do. But let's stop acting like other's are required to follow our chosen path. Spend your time worrying about YOUR path, you'll be too busy to concern yourself how other people witch or worship."
