Opinion split:

Liverpool do not have many candidates for the title of Player of the Season, but there are two notable names. Two of our writers have their say.

This season is not a classic for Liverpool. At this time last year, hopes of winning the treble were gone after Manchester City's comeback against Aston Villa and a tight Champions League final defeat to Real Madrid.

Next season, the Red Devils will certainly not be playing in Europe's top league but will instead have to settle for a place in the Europa League - something no one expected. This means there aren't many contenders for the club's Player of the Year award. Luis Díaz was said to have been at the helm until he was injured in October and he has only recently returned. Most others are below normal or on the treatment table.

However, Mohamed Salah and Alisson Becker are the most notable names on the list. Two of our Liverpool.com editors have had their say on who will win the award and you can add yours in the comments section below the article. "What would the Red Devils be without Mohamed Salah?" -Matt Addison

Liverpool took time by allowing Salah to sign a new three-year, $68m (£55m/€63m) contract (via Goal) last summer, but the move is bold. This FSG statement turned out to be absolutely correct.

Salah has scored 30 goals and assisted another 15 for his team-mates in a campaign that has been difficult for Liverpool collectively. How much better could it be if the rest of the team were working properly?

With 45 goals contributed (and Southampton yet to play), Salah is only two goals behind what he did last season. He had beaten the previous three seasons, including seasons in which Liverpool won the Champions League and Premier League. The Egyptians show no signs of slowing down and are still churning out world-class numbers. Alisson was excellent, but Salah is another part of the elite world.

"Alisson Becker is the best candidate" - Tom Beattie

I don't deny Liverpool's attacking efforts this season, but at the same time, this team is built to score and that has never been an issue for Jürgen Klopp's teams. Alisson's performances this season have caused the Reds to blush countless times, with his contributions consistently outstanding throughout a disappointing season.

In the midst of the team's decline this season, Alisson is the only player who can truly say he has maintained his form in previous seasons, and is second only to David de Gea in the number of games held. clean sheet, with 14 games in the league. . No doubt Salah has been in clinical condition for most of the second half of this season, but he has had some bland runs - such as scoring one goal in eight games in a row. first three months of 2023.

One cannot ignore the Brazilian goalkeeper's reliability in individual situations, as the 30-year-old is perhaps the best in the world in this regard. To be really corny about this, there are some stats on FBref
