Gianni Infantino, the president of FIFA, has expressed his "full solidarity" with Real Madrid forward Vinicius Junior, who endured more racial taunts during his team's La Liga match against Valencia.
Vinicius called out the league on Sunday night, saying it now "belongs to racists" after previously experiencing racist abuse on numerous occasions in La Liga this season.
"It wasn't the first time, second time, or third time. In La Liga, racism is common, he claimed.
"The opposition supports it, the competition believes it's reasonable, and so does the Federation. So sorry again. Racists now own the championship that formerly belonged to Ronaldinho, Ronaldo, Cristiano [Ronaldo], and Lionel Messi. A stunning country that I adore and that welcomed me consented to project the stereotype of a racist society to the rest of the globe. I'm sorry for the Spanish people who disagree, but in Brazil today, Spain is viewed as a racist nation.
Gianni Infantino expressed his support for Vinicius Junior while denouncing the racist taunts and using the occasion to advocate for the implementation of FIFA's three-step procedure for handling such situations in all leagues worldwide.
Vinicius has my complete support, he said. "Racism has no place in football or in society, and FIFA supports all players who have encountered such circumstances. This must be the case, as evidenced by what happened during the Valencia-Real Madrid game.
"For this reason, the three-step procedure is used in FIFA events and is advised at all football levels. To start, you call a timeout and make an announcement. Second, the players leave the field and a speaker declares that the game will be stopped if the attacks continue. Thirdly, if the attacks continue, the match ends and the three points are awarded to the opposition. The match then begins.
These are the guidelines that ought to be followed by all nations and leagues. It is obvious that this is easier said than done, but we must nonetheless implement it and support it through education.
