Brentford will be hoping Coventry City don't win promotion to the Premier League this weekend to aid their pursuit of striker Viktor Gyokeres.

The Sweden international - who has scored 21 Championship goals and set up a further 10 - is valued at around £25million.

Although Everton, West Ham and Leeds have also been on the trail of 24-year-old Gyokeres, it's Brentford who have shown the most conviction to get a deal agreed.

But they fear if Coventry beat Luton Town in Saturday's Championship play-off final at Wembley to secure top-flight football, a deal will be much harder to strike.

The Bees see Gyokeres as the ideal man to fill in for Ivan Toney, who will be banned for eight months for breaching FA betting rules.

If the Sky Blues go up, however, they will be more determined to keep hold of their player of the year.

Coventry, who last played Premier League football in 2001, have been steered back to the brink of promotion by manager Mark Robins, who signed Gyokeres initially on loan from Brighton in January 2021.

That deal was made permanent on a three-year contract in July 2021, with the Swede scoring 43 times in 115 games overall for the club.

Coventry overcame Middlesbrough 1-0 on aggregate in a tight and tense play-off semi-final, with Gustavo Hamer scoring the decisive goal in the second leg at the Riverside Stadium.

They will take on Luton at Wembley on Saturday evening after the Hatters beat Sunderland 3-2 on aggregate over the two legs of their semi-final.

Meanwhile, Brentford will also have eyes on the FIFA Under-20 World Cup on Monday.

They have South Korea's 18-year-old centre-back Kim Ji-Soo, who plays for Seongnam in his home country, firmly in their sights.
