Real Madrid has complained to the Spanish State Attorney General's Office, claiming that racism directed at Vinicius Junior is a "hate crime."
Sunday's 1-0 LaLiga loss for Real at Valencia was the scene of an alleged racial attack on Brazilian forward Vinicius.
According to Valencia, police have identified the fan who made the racial gestures toward Vincius, and the person will be permanently banned from the Mestalla.
Following the break, the game was stopped as Vinicius alerted the referee to spectators who were reportedly insulting him. The 22-year-old later claimed on social media that racism is "normal" in LaLiga.
The club issued a strongly worded statement on Monday, saying, "Real Madrid CF demonstrates its strongest repulsion and condemns the acts that took place yesterday against our player Vinicius Junior.
The cohabitation paradigm of our social and democratic state of law is directly attacked by these events.Real Madrid believes that these types of attacks also qualify as hate crimes. As a result, it has filed the appropriate complaint with the state attorney general's office, specifically with the prosecutor's office against hate crimes and discrimination, so that the circumstances can be looked into and accountability can be established.
The public prosecutor's office is mandated by Article 124 of the Spanish Constitution to advance the administration of justice and protect citizens' and the public's rights.
Real Madrid has contacted the state attorney general's office due to this and the gravity of the events, without regard to whether or not it would appear as a private prosecution in the ongoing procedures.
Vinicius, who was dismissed for violent behavior during the extra period of Real's loss following an argument with striker Hugo Duro, made the following statement on Instagram: "It was not the first time, not the second time, and not the third. In LaLiga, racism is commonplace. The opposition supports it since they believe it to be commonplace, as do the Federation and the competition. I am truly sorry. The racists now own the championship that formerly belonged to Ronaldinho, Ronaldo, Cristiano (Ronaldo), and Lionel Messi.
