After falling to West Ham on Sunday, 3-1, Leeds are now in danger of being demoted from the Premier League.

If the Yorkshire club loses to Tottenham the next Sunday, their three-season top-flight run would come to an end; yet, depending on other outcomes, even a victory on the penultimate day could not be enough to save them.

The PA news agency examines some of the reasons why things went wrong at Elland Road in this article.

Legacy of Bielsa throws a shadow

When Leeds finally ended their 16-year Premier League exile in 2020, chairman Andrea Radrizzani, former director of football Victor Orta, and chief executive Angus Kinnear were showered with praise.

Giving head coach Marcelo Bielsa the keys to the team's vehicle in 2018 was a brilliant move, but how they handled the void left when he was fired in February 2022 will forever define their legacy. The bus stopped when the Argentine's employment was lost due to insufficient performance. Since then, the board has made a majority of poor judgments, and one by one, all the wheels have come off.

What specifically went wrong on the board?

Jesse Marsch, who succeeded Bielsa, was praised for being a natural replacement, although his performances and outcomes remained unchanged.

No. Leeds failed to adequately bolster their roster after defying the odds to finish ninth under Bielsa in their first season back in the top league. Patrick Bamford, who is prone to injury, and Tyler Adams, a midfielder, are two great examples of this lack of coverage. Additionally, the team was unbalanced, lacking depth in other crucial places while having an excess of wide players. Since promotion, certain signings have been successful, including those of Raphinha, Adams, Luis Sinisterra, and Willy Gnonto. However, too many others have failed to have an impact, and the signing of Georginio Rutter, a club record, has left fans perplexed.

Has the ownership controversy clouded the situation?

Allardyce's last-minute hiring was a sign of Leeds' poor leadership.
