The Green Republic Project, a youth-led grass-roots movement working on climate change, has urged the media to give climate change problems greater attention in order to raise public awareness of the need for sustainable and responsible environmental practices.

"I want to make a call to action to the media, the fourth estate of the realm, and agenda-setters to utilize your platforms to set the climate agenda by giving climate and environmental-related topics high headlines, including editorials, to spark conversation on the topic.

According to Nana Yaw Osei-Darkwa, the project's founder and convener, "it will also aid in educating the general public on the need for responsible and sustainable environmental practices if we are to win the climate battle, which threatens our very survival as a people."

Speaking at the third annual Climate Benefit Ball last Saturday in Accra, Mr. Osei-Darkwa noted that raising public awareness may alter people's regular attitudes towards the environment.

Event

The subject of the event, which was attended by leaders of government agencies, business titans, diplomats, and corporate executives, among others, was "Reversing the Climate Trends: No Future Without Trees."

Additionally, it was intended to highlight the organization's achievements in promoting environmental sustainability in the nation and to raise money for its "engaging the future" series, which aims to encourage young people to adopt environmentally friendly behaviors and to plant 100,000 trees across the nation by September 2023.

The Climate Change Enabler Award, awarded annually to people who are dedicated to conservation and landscape restoration, was given to Sammy Awuku, Director-General of the National Lottery Authority.

extra trees

Mr. Osei-Darkwa said that people have to adapt their habits to cut carbon emissions and plant more trees in order to dramatically reverse trends in climate change.

"I shudder to say that we will be digging our own graves and inviting Armageddon if we fail to appreciate the tricky and uncertain times we find ourselves in and continue to do the same things that have brought us to this point," he remarked.

The Green Republic Project, in the words of Mr. Osei-Darkwa, "is not simply about planting and caring for trees, but equally important—and more so—is promoting sustainability through engaging with the community and the media, hosting international gatherings and conferences, and developing platforms like the annual climate benefit ball series.

obligation to society

Bice Osei Kuffour, the managing director of Ghana Post, advised businesses to use a portion of their social corporate responsibility budgets to support environmentally friendly practices.

Berenice Owen-Jones, the Australian High Commissioner to Ghana, said that her nation was leading global efforts in forestry initiatives by increasing investment in the field.
