The Economist rejects government budget warningsto manage IMF bailouts
United States economist and lecturer Dr Sa-ad Iddrisu has questioned the government'sability to effectively use the IMF bailout, saying that over the years, it has not shown enough fiscal discipline to rely on it. heart
He said this while speaking on JoyNews in Accra and watchedby GhanaWeb. According to him, the government's promise to make good use of the moneyto restructure the economy is causing many concerns, especially during the upcoming elections.
“The first question I want to ask is, has the government shownenough fiscal discipline thatGhanaians are confident that it will manage the IMF money well. Especially now that we are preparing for the presidential and parliamentary elections in 2024. I think this is a bigquestion that every Ghanaian should ask the government. Look at how the government has spent or look at how the government has managed our finances from 2017 to now,” he said.
For Dr Iddrisu, over the years the government has turned a blind eye to recommendations that would have prevented the community from using the money in the first place. "Eventhe international community before the IMF asked the government to reduce its ministers, but the government did not do it. Therefore, many international organizations and experts asked the government to reduce wages in some areas, the government turned a deaf ear and did nothing when," he added. He believes that the government will do more to show Ghanaians that this time it will manage the money properly as it should.
"So when you have a situation like this and now the government has come in with such a large amount of money, again, trust will be important. But if the government can show Ghanaians well, then I believe anything in the IMF report, people will start believing that the government will be able to do that,” he continued.
Are you happy with the $3 billion IMF that the government got?
