Politicians, according to the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) of Ghana, are partially to blame for the country's recent construction collapses.

Additionally, they blamed the predicament on developers who didn't hire experts to work on their projects.

Additionally, according to the report, Mr. Boateng pleaded with lawmakers to refrain from meddling with the professional job of engineers who wanted to make sure developers complied with building codes.

"What makes matters worse is when our engineers start enforcing development control by visiting construction sites to assess structures.

A politician may advise people not to visit a particular location again, he stated.

According to Mr. Boateng, there is no way to disobey the Chief Executive of an Assembly under the local government system because you will be transferred the following day and the Chief Executive at your new location will already be aware that you are a very stubborn person before you arrive. The organization's local engineers were not provided with the equipment, resources, and vehicles they needed to do their jobs.

Interference

Henry Kwadwo Boateng, the president of IET in Ghana, told the Daily Graphic that although the numerous metropolitan, municipal, and district assemblies (MMDAs) had qualified and experienced engineers, they were frequently denied the authority to enforce building codes.

He said that members were frequently relocated when they insisted on carrying out their duties.  He acknowledged that there could be a few stubborn engineers, just as in other professions, but said that those working in MMDAs faced significant difficulties, such as the worry of victimization.

Recall

In the first week of this month, three three-story buildings fell simultaneously in three distinct locations.

They included a six-story building being built at the University for Development Studies (UDS) City Campus at Sagnarigu in Tamale, the Northern Region; a three-story building at Nanakrom in the Adentan municipality; and a third three-story building being built at the SDA Junction on the Adentan side of La-Nkwantanang Madina in Accra.

Three people were hurt in the incidents, and one individual lost his life.

And in October 2020, a five-story church structure collapsed in Akyem Batabi in the Eastern Region, killing 22 people.

Three people were murdered and 18 others injured earlier in July 2015 when a three-story structure fell at Cantonments in Accra.

Service Fire

The scenario, according to the Ghana National Fire Service, was caused by a number of factors, including a shoddy foundation, a lack of reinforcement, weak concrete, inadequate supervision, and the use of subpar building materials.

It cautioned developers against using practitioners and craftspeople who were not licensed or competent.
