By: Cecilia Mensah

Our well-being is one of the greatest assets one can have. Not only does it prolong our life, it saves time as well as money. Inasmuch as we all want to live our best lives in good shape, certain lifestyles and eating habits can be detrimental to our health. Stroke  is a medical ailment which is caused as a of a blockage of blood supply to parts of the brain. This causes certain parts of the body to function as their nerves are unable receive impulses from the brain, causing stroke.

One medical condition that we most of the time link to stroke is hypertension.  Hypertension is a condition where an individual's blood pressure goes higher than the regular blood pressure level. Causes of hypertension include; high intake of salt and sugar, excessive alcohol intake, inadequate rest, lack of exercise, just to mention a few. Hypertension as they say, "is a silent killer". This is because, it is one of the conditions that are usually ignored, and cause a massive damage to the entire organ. The high rate of stroke in young people is a problem that affects the labour force of the country. Based on this reason, the government can put certain measures in place to curb the high rate of stroke in young people. Such measures include; Public education on the effects of uncontrollable hypertension, health screening for young people in communities and cities amongst others. Individually, we also have a role to play in curbing the high rate of hypertension. Some strategies include;

  • Consult with a healthcare professional: It is crucial to consult with a healthcare professional for an accurate diagnosis and to create an individualized treatment plan based on your specific condition and medical history.
  • Follow a healthy diet: Adopting a heart-healthy diet can significantly help control hypertension. This includes consuming a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins (such as poultry, fish, and legumes), and low-fat dairy products. Reduce the intake of sodium (salt), saturated fats, trans fats, and cholesterol.
  • Reduce sodium intake: Excess sodium intake can contribute to elevated blood pressure. Limit the consumption of processed and packaged foods, which often contain high levels of sodium. Opt for fresh, whole foods and use herbs and spices to flavor your meals instead of salt.
  • Manage stress: Chronic stress can contribute to hypertension. Explore stress management techniques such as regular exercise, deep breathing exercises, meditation, yoga, or engaging in hobbies and activities that help you relax and unwind. .                                           The well-being of our young ones determine the future of our country. Making healthcare a priority will not only help our country's labor force, but it will also make our lives comfortable and long lasting.
