Several people were hurt, and at least 20 people died as a result of a fire at the Mahdia Secondary School in the mining town of Mahdia in central Guyanese.

Early on Monday, the incident occurred, engulfing a secondary school dormitory and trapping students inside.

Because of the poor weather, emergency services are having difficulty putting out the fire, according to the government.

A special center has been established in Georgetown, the nation's capital, where some of the additional injured are being prepared for evacuation.

"This is a serious catastrophe. Irfaan Ali, the president of Guyana, described it as horrible and painful.

According to AFP, he stated that the two main hospitals in Georgetown would be ready to "give every single child who requires attention the best possible opportunity to get that attention," in addition to the medical teams stationed at the airport.

'It is with great sadness that we bring to you a heart-wrenching update on the fire at the dormitory at the Mahdia Secondary School in central Guyana,' read a statement from the Department of Public Information. In that fire, we lost many lovely souls. At this time, there have been 20 fatalities and numerous injuries.

It was not specified in the statement whether the victims were staff members, teachers, or students.

The government initially announced that "the Cabinet is being briefed and kept updated on a horrifying fire at the dormitory in Mahdia. The early response had been hampered by the bad weather.

The statement added, "At this time, our hearts and prayers are with our children and their families.

The Guyanese government's initiative to enhance education in the country's less developed areas is focused on the dormitory at Mahdia Secondary School, where the fire occurred. The building of the school dormitory is referred to in past government comments as an endeavor to “bridge the gaps between the hinterland and coastal areas.”

Guyana is located between Venezuela and Suriname on the northern coast of South America.
