History of Kumawu and MPs since 1992
Elections are currently being held in Kumawu and Ashanti regions due to the death of MPPhilip Basoah.
Voting started at 7 am. Four people are vying to be candidates for the district's House of Assembly.
They are Ernest Yaw Anim of the NPP, Akwasi Amankwa of the NDC and two independentswith the same name as Kwaku Duah. As elections arecurrently underway, GhanaWeb highlights the stories of Kumawu and the MPs who have represented the area since 1992:
Kumawu is a small town and is the capital of Sekyere Kumawu, a district in the Ashanti regionof Ghana.
He has been represented in parliament since 1993. The seat has been held by the NPP since 1996 till date.
The only time the NDC held office was in 1993. JargisuIbrahim is the first lawmaker from Kumawu constituency under the National Democratic Congress ticket.
However, in 1996 the NDC lost the seat to Reo Addi Basoah of the NPP, and to this day, the NPP retains the seat. In 2002, Reo Addi Basoah died at Korle-Bu University Hospital after a short illness.
After his death, there were local elections that saw the election of Yaw Baah as a member of Parliament in the 4th and 5th Legislatures of the 4th Republic. However, in 2012Philip Basoah again won the NPP contest and held seats in the 6th, 7th and 8th Houses of Parliament until his sudden death in March 2023.
The battle for the party representative continues
