A Ghanaian peacekeeper wins the prestigious UN Gender Award 



Ghanaian peacekeeper, Captain Cecilia Erzuah, has been awarded the 2022 United Nations Military Gender Advocate of the Year award.

The
 United Nations announced the announcement in a press release on Monday, May 22, 2023. Captain Erzuah, 32, is Ghana's first peacekeeper and the first person from the military to receive theprestigious award. The award will be presented by United Nations Secretary-GeneralAntonio Guterres as part of thecelebrations for the International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers on Thursday, May 25, 2023. 

Captain Erzuah, who has served in Abyei – an area on the border between South Sudan and Sudan since March 2022,expressed her gratitude for being selected to receive the award while acknowledging her platoon members. He described the award as 'an award for all of us'. 

Captain Erzuah is an advocate of gender equality and hasmade sure that his 22-year-old army is made up of men and women and has been touringand reaching out to local leaders as well as women and youth groups, so that theyunderstand effectively address the problems and needs of the community. Together with UN civil servants, she also facilitated discussions on domestic violence, gender equality and child care. These discussions led to an increase in the number of women entering the country's defense committee, which was previously dominated by men.The participant of the city ofcommunity has made the first thing talking about the threatof violence against civilian people to oppose civilians.

The United Nations Gender Support Award established in 206 recognizes the dedication and efforts of peacekeeperspromoting the principles of UN Security Council Resolution 1325 on women, peace and security. 

“Resolution
 1325 reminds us that women peacekeepers do more than support global peace and security. They lead the way. By all accounts, Captain Cecilia Erzuah of Ghana is one of those leaders," said Secretary-General Antonio Guterres. He added, "In all aspects, Captain Erzuah'swork has set a precedent for seeing women's needs and concerns reflected in our peacekeeping operations."
