5 regional coaches can play the role of the Black Stars in the future
Some Ghanaians are the reason why many local coaches do notperform well when given the right to lead the Black Stars of Ghana.
What is worrying is that foreigncoaches perform well during the competition, unlike local coaches who leave the competition early. However, Ghana's best AFCONperformance in the last decade was in 2015, when the Stars emerged as runners-up under Israeli coach Avram Grant at the FIFA World Cup. 15 minutesunder the direction of theSerbian coach, Milovan Rajevic.
However, Ghana's success on the continent is attributed to the late Charles Kumfi Gyamiwho led the team to threeAFCON titles in 1963, 1965 and 1982 and the late Fred Osam-Duodo who led Ghana to the title in the year 1978. In the last two decades, the story of regional coaches has taken a different turn when it comes to national team work, even when it comes to regional teams many clubs prefer to work with a white coach instead of a provides home training.
The banker of King Faisal Football Club, Alhaji Gruzah revealed in an interview his love for foreign coaches, saying:“Who teaches them [nationalcoaches]? Where do they [district teachers] hold their training classes? \'' Gruzahreplied when asked about Bossicic's arrival. Even the head of the GFA is saying that thecoaches of the clubs that finished first to fourth in the competition will be sent to foreign countries for coaching,why didn't he mention Burkina Faso."
Sellas Tetteh, James Kwesi Appiah, Maxwell Konadu and CK Akunnor were the localcoaches who took over the Black Stars from 2008 to 2021. GhanaWeb takes a look at five local coaches who could potentially compete for the Black Stars coaching positionshould the GFA decide to recruit one soon.
Evans Adotey
Adotey, 58, is one of the most experienced strikers in the region, having coached Ghana'sU17 women's team, the Black Maidens, from 2014 to 2019, leading the team to the third quarter and most recently in 'inthree FIFA Women U-17. World Cup campaign and was the first assistant of the Ghana U20national team with Abdul Karim Zito. Adotey joined Medeama as assistant manager in 2013 and was appointed caretaker manager where he led the club to their first FA MTN Cup and finished 4th at the end of the 2012-13 Ghana Premier League season.
He joined Karela United in 2020 and joined Medeama in March 2023 as the Yellows and Mauves are currently top of the league table with three games remaining to end the 2022/23 season. If Medeama wins their remaining three games, he will become the first manager to win Medeama their first Premier League title.
Paa Kwesi Fabian
Paa Kwesi Fabian has managed seven Premier League clubs from Ghana, making him the most successful player among the other four contenders. He started at Asante Kotoko in 2002 as an assistant and is now at two-time Premier League champions Aduana Stars in his second season at the club, managing the Dormaa club from 2019-2021.
He also coached Ghana U-17, U-23 men's and Uganda U-20and U-17. After holding Aduana Stars in first place for a week, it fell to second for Medeama to take the points behind the leaders.
Cassim Mingle
The 64-year-old has been doing an impressive job at Bechem United since he started his career in 2021. He previously managed the Olympics from January 2015 to December 2015. He ended his first season with Bechem United and played in the MTN FA Cup Final but lost 2-1 to Accra Hearts of Oak. In his second season with the Hunters, Bechem is currently in third position to be named NASCO Coach of the Month for January 2023.
Christophe Ennin
At 41, Ennin is still the youngest of the other four players but he is also credited with being one of the most experiencedcoaches in the Ghana Premier League. He joined Berekum Chelsea in July 2022 after spellsin Thailand with Sakkaeo FC (Division 2), Rayong FC, Kampang Phet FC and Korat Mazda FC.
It was one of the best last seasons when Berekum Chelsea came 8th in his debut season but the former footballer has improved his performance in the 2022/23 season now andthe Biribies are currently sittingfifth in the table. He was namedNASCO Coach of the Month forSeptember 2022.
Michael Osei
The former Ghana international is slowly transforming Bibiani Gold Stars into a big club after the Miners were promoted to play in the BetPawa Premier League and 2021/22 Division One League.
