WE'LL HELP HIM WIN BACK HIS SEAT ? NDC

Any time a by-election is held, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has vowed to back James Gyakye Quayson, who is under fire, in his bid to retake the Assin North parliamentary seat.

In order to secure Honourable Quayson an even more resounding win in the impending by-election, the NDC's general secretary, Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, declared in a statement that "the whole weight of the party, including the Minority Caucus in Parliament, will be thrown behind him.

The statement also characterized the decision as odd and made reference to instances involving Messrs. J.H. Mensah, Baba Jamal, and Peter Amewu where the "Supreme Court had stated that it did not have the jurisdiction to invalidate a parliamentary election and that such a matter should be taken to the High Court."

Even if there are "serious questions about the legitimacy of this decision after consulting with Mr. Quayson," it was stated, "the leadership of the NDC wishes to state unequivocally that we are ready for the by-election that is now the result of this decision."

Recall

Last Wednesday, the Supreme Court ordered that Parliament remove Mr. Quayson's name from its records.

This decision was the result of a lawsuit that was brought before the Supreme Court within its original authority to look into the validity of Mr. Quayson's election.

Prior to the 2020 election, Mr. Quayson was charged with having two citizenships, which he adamantly rejected.

In accordance with the decision, Parliament is anticipated to declare the Assin North seat vacant, with a by-election soon to follow.

In a previous statement, the Minority Leader, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, stated that "Hon. James Gyakye Quayson was not a dual citizen at the time of his election, nor was he a dual citizen at the time he took the oath of office as a Member of Parliament."

The purpose of Ghana's constitutional framers was not to let a dual citizen carry out parliamentary duties.
