University students asked me to match NPP money given tothem for their votes - NDC MPKumawu
The National Democratic Congress (NDC) House of Assembly candidate in the recently concluded election inKumawu constituency, Kwasi Amankwaa, has explained how the New Patriotic Party (NPP) polling party has affected his chances of winning the vote.
Speaking on JoyNews' PM Express, Mr. Amankwaa said that in order for the NPP to control the seat, candidates were given GH?50.00 to get their votes. He made it known that this bad incident happened to some young people in the area who were asking him for money and he wanted their votes.
According to Mr. Amankwaa, these young people are made up of university students who want to sell their votes to the highest bidder. “I saw some of these youths. There is a villagecalled Banko in Kumawu, about six university students came to me and said, "These people are giving money, we want to vote for you, you can match the money they are giving us".
"I said, 'I can give you more than they give you, but my conscience will not allow me to do that,'" he told Aysha Ibrahim on Tuesday. He said he was saddened by what the college students did.
"This is the future we are looking forward to. Our future leaders are ready to sell their future for 50 cedis,” he said.
The NPP managed to retain seats in Kumawu constituency. NPP candidate Ernest Yaw Anim got 15,264 votes representing 70.91% whilecandidate Kwasi Amankwaa got3,727 votes or 17.29%.
