Romelu Lukaku has asserted that if his proposed transfer to Chelsea in 2021 didn't work out, he 'knew' Inter Milan would try to get him.
When his loan agreement with the Champions League finalists expires at the end of the current campaign, the Belgian forward is getting ready to return to Stamford Bridge. He has fallen short of the previous expectations established throughout his tenure at the club from 2019 to 2021, but he still has nothing but positive things to say about Inter this term. The striker has also mentioned how he feels like he 'belongs' at the San Siro in the run-up to his return to west London. I was successful at Chelsea last season, the striker claimed in an interview with Het Laatste Nieuws. However, I was aware that I still had Inter if things didn't work out at Chelsea.
I knew I belonged when I signed my name once more. At Anderlecht, I too experienced that. I'm serious about this club. I want to give it my all. They can see that here. The best thing there is is being encouraged here. Lukaku joined for Chelsea as a teenager before being sent on numerous loans, leading to a strained relationship between the two clubs throughout his career. Following stops at Everton, West Brom, and Manchester United, Lukaku ended up playing for Inter in 2021, where he soon won over the support of the crowd. He became one of the most productive attackers in Europe with his 34 goals from 51 appearances, and he carried that success into the following season with 30 goals in 44 games.
The Belgian striker was persuaded to come back to Stamford Bridge by his performance in Italy, which was enough to convince the Blues to part with £97.5 million of their hard-earned money.
He swiftly lost the support of Chelsea's then-manager Thomas Tuchel, who was fired earlier this season, as his troubles there rapidly became clear.
Despite Inter's desire to get the Belgian back after sending him on loan, Lukaku has fallen short of the benchmarks he had previously set.
In 33 games in all competitions this year, he has scored just 13 goals, and he has battled several injuries.
