WHAT HAPPENED IN KUMAWU WILL REFLECT IN 2024; SAMMY WARNS THE NPP KK

Sammy Gyemfi, the National Communication Officer of the opposition National Democratic Congress says the ruling New Patriotic party should be worried about the outcome of the just-ended by-election held in the Kumawu Constituency, in the Ashanti Region.

The outspoken lawyer indicated that the voter apathy that characterized the election should be a cause of concern to the New Patriotic Party given that the Kumawu Constituency is their stronghold.

He said the abysmal voter turnout which was witnessed during the Kumawu by-election will be repeated in strongholds of the NPP in 2024 since the party( the governing party) has not performed up to the expectations of the people.

The Kumawu seat became vacant following the demise of the NPP lawmaker for the area, Philip Bosoah. With the number of Members of Parliament in the house almost evenly distributed, the two major political parties saw this as an opportunity to buttress their strength in the legislative house.

Bigwigs from both the governing New Patriotic Party and the opposition National Democratic Congress  stormed the area to whip up support for their candidates.

But as expected, the New Patriotic Party's candidate emerged victorious with 15, 264 representing 70.91% of votes, with the NDC's Kwasi Amankwah coming in, in a distance second with 3,723 (17.29%). With the two independent candidates sharing the remaining valid votes cast.

But the positive the opposition National Democratic Congress is taking from the election is how they have been able to significantly increase their votes in the constituency.

For instance, Honourable Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwah, who concurs with Sammy Gyemfi's stance on the National Democratic Congress' performance in the Kumawu by-election asserts that because the NDC was able to increase their votes by 52.% over what they secured in 2020, and with the NPP managing only 2%, increments over the previous election, the ruling government should be worried going into the 2024 General Elections.
