Ben Foster played a key role in Wrexham's promotion to the Football League but that looked unlikely in his first training session with the club.

Former Premier League goalkeeper Foster retired at the end of last season after a career at Manchester United, West Brom and Watford.

However, the 40-year-old couldn't stay away from football for long, and after 10 months without playing, he retired in March to join his first club, Wrexham.

Foster was brought on after starting keeper Rob Lainton suffered a six-week injury and saved a last-minute penalty in a 3–2 win over promoted rivals Notts County.

The veteran player has impressed in eight appearances for the Hollywood-owned club, although he didn't really inspire confidence in his first training session. Wrexham teammate Mark Howard described Foster's first practice session as "a bit cranky" on an episode of Fozcast, but Wrexham star Ollie Palmer went further than that.

"I'll tell you the truth - the ball goes to his feet and he just goes out of the game. No pressure. I was like, 'Who the fuck is this guy,'" Palmer said. Foster's podcast.

"The bullet hit him and everyone said 'yeah Fozz [Foster] is classy'. England, Watford, Man Utd [his old clubs].

"And I'm talking about a back pass that my daughter can parry. So it goes back to him and he hits it - straight from the hill."

Almost unable to hold back a laugh, Foster confirmed:

"It's a true story."

Wrexham have confirmed that they will speak to Foster "to determine if he intends to retire or continue playing".

The goalkeeper admits he is not sure if he will sign a contract extension until the 2023/24 season in Ligue 2.

"We won the league and did what we had to do. I did what I had to do," he said on his YouTube channel.

"It's a special club. Am I going to join another year? Oh my god, I don't know. I'll really have to think about it, it's as simple as that. Advertisement

"I've never felt so loved or welcomed as here at Wrexham. I've really enjoyed my eight games, we'll see it's as simple as that."
