Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has warned the club's next owners of lavish spending similar to what Todd Boehly and other Chelsea executives sanctioned during the season. This.

The Blues have spent more than £500m during the campaign to sign big names like Enzo Fernandez, Wesley Fofana and Marc Cucurella but that spending has yet to bear fruit.

Chelsea have had three managers this season, with Frank Lampard set to be replaced at the end of the season when his interim term ends.

And they are in 12th place with 43 points with two games remaining and will not be in Europe next season.

Mauricio Pochettino is set to be appointed as the club's new manager, but the extent of spending under the Argentinian remains to be seen. And Ten Hag has warned future United owners, if the takeover is successful, should have a clear strategy this summer rather than just splashing money - as Chelsea did under co-owner Boehly.

The takeover process at United is still ongoing, with independent reports on Wednesday that there could be a major update on its potential outcome within the next 48 hours.

Qatari businessman Sheikh Jassim, through his Nine Two Foundation, and a joint venture between petrochemical company INEOS and British billionaire Jim Ratcliffe are battling to become the next owner of United, succeeding the Glazer family.

But Ten Hag sent them a warning that any potential transfer strategy will be successful.

Speaking ahead of United's Premier League game against Chelsea on Thursday, the Dutchman said (quoting from the Manchester Evening News):

"Right now [there is] a concentration of good players, top managers, as well as money - it's all here in the UK. Advertisement

"It makes for a great competition but also a tough and tough competition.

"You have to do it right to have money, but you have to do it and spend it smartly and have a strategy behind it. Otherwise, the money won't come. When there's no strategy or the right strategy, money doesn't work.

“I think there are a lot of teams in the Premier League that are really strong. Speaking of Aston Villa, talking about Brighton, talking about Brentford, I think there are a lot of really strong and tough teams, not just these top six."
