  • Chelsea are 'prepared to match PSG's £52million offer for Manuel Ugarte'

Chelsea has reportedly informed Sporting Lisbon that they are willing to activate Manuel Ugarte's release clause of £52 million in a last-minute attempt to beat Paris Saint-Germain to his signature. Earlier reports from France and Portugal had suggested that PSG were close to securing a deal for the Uruguayan midfielder. Lisbon-based newspaper Correio da Manha stated that Ugarte would sign a five-year contract with the French champions after PSG informed his agent, Jorge Mendes, that they would trigger the £52 million clause in his contract.

However, according to Brazilian journalist Bruno Andrade, Chelsea is still in the race for Ugarte and recently sent a representative to Lisbon. The club has reportedly informed Sporting that they are also willing to meet the release clause, leaving the decision in Ugarte's hands to choose between the two clubs.

Earlier this week, Mail Sport revealed that Chelsea had been monitoring Ugarte as they considered a potential move for the defensive midfielder. Ugarte has impressed during his second season at Sporting, making 47 appearances in all competitions. The 22-year-old joined Sporting in the summer of 2021 from Famalicao for just over £5 million. Since then, he has accumulated 85 appearances for the club and has also earned eight caps for the Uruguayan national team.

Jorge Mendes, Ugarte's agent, has been in talks with several Premier League clubs regarding a possible transfer for the talented midfielder. Liverpool and Newcastle United have scouted Ugarte throughout the season but are currently focused on other priorities. Aston Villa has recently expressed interest in the midfielder as well.

The race for Manuel Ugarte's signature has intensified, with Chelsea making a late push to secure his services. The £52 million release clause seems to be a common figure for both PSG and Chelsea, and it now rests on Ugarte to decide between the two clubs. As the situation unfolds, it remains to be seen which team will emerge as the victor in the pursuit of the promising Uruguayan midfielder.
