Espanyol calls for Atletico Madrid's results to be annulled after Antoine Griezmann's controversial goal

Espanyol's 3-3 draw with Atletico Madrid on Wednesday night was an absolute classic. Diego Simeone's side took a 3-0 lead after 46 minutes, before the home side made an impressive comeback to secure a point.



It was also a situation of great controversy, with Espanyol angry that Atletico's second goal, courtesy of Antoine Griezmann, was allowed to stand. The goal was disallowed because VAR could not determine whether the ball had definitely crossed the line.

After witnessing the return goal, Espanyol decided to take the matter to the competition organizers. According to an official statement, they demanded that the result of the match be annulled.


Currently, LaLiga has no scoring technology, unlike most major European leagues. This is something that has caused a lot of controversy over the past few years and the debate is likely to be reopened after this incident.


It remains to be seen what the Competition Commission will decide. If the game is to be replayed, it will definitely be the middle of next week, when there are only 10 days left until the 38th match of the LaLiga season.
